EXTERNAL ATTACK SURFACE

The asset you forgot still faces the internet.

Discovery becomes useful when a team can connect the asset with an owner and an action.

Your inventory has an external edge

Cloud projects, acquired businesses and legacy infrastructure can introduce services outside the usual inventory update process. The external view asks a different question: what can an outsider discover today?

Validate the ownership boundary

A matching name or shared host is not conclusive ownership evidence. Teams need a repeatable way to review associations and decide whether an asset belongs in the organisation’s scope.

Add the business context

An exposed service matters differently depending on the data it handles, the business process it supports and the controls around it. Avoid treating every observation as an equally urgent vulnerability.

Make the next action explicit

Discovery should lead to a decision: verify ownership, investigate an exposure, assign remediation or record why no action is needed. A finding without an owner can remain on a dashboard long after it stops being new.

Keep testing and discovery connected

External monitoring complements deeper authorised assessments. It does not prove internal control effectiveness or replace penetration testing. Use it to improve the scope and timing of the work your teams already perform.
